Interview with IRDORATH,

Hello, from Bathory´zine from Spain.

Markus: Hello, thank you very much for that interview and your interest in IRDORATH. We appreciate that very much.

Irdorath was formed in 2005, and I think that at that time you were only 3 members?

You are right, Irdorath started in 2005 out of the idea of three young people, that wanted to create extreme music, instead of only listen to it. But after the idea of that band was born, it didn't took too long to find a complete line up.
But the members changed a lot over the time and I am the last founding member of IRDORATH. Many things change in your life when you get older, so a lot of people quit with making music as soon as they get older and when it does not fit in the rest of their life anymore. Our actual line up consists of four grown up people, for whom creating and performing music is a stable part of their life! That makes a big difference to a band that consists of youngsters and gets a much more professional cooperation in between the members.

Your first demo "Erwachen" as well as your first albums "Götterdämmerung (Zorn der Elemente)" and "Dekonstrukteur des Fleisches" were in German. Why did you decide later to switch to English?

When our former singer, who also wrote the lyrics, left the band, we had to decide a lot for our future productions and creations. As soon as it was clear, that I was going to take over the vocal part besides my guitar work, we also decided to switch to the English language. It felt better for us switching to English and it also has the benefit, that more people understand the lyrics. We do not regret that decision at all!

Your lyrics at the beginning spoke about Death, condemnation, feelings ... Do you continue with the same theme?

Somehow yes, you could summarize it like that, but the main aspect that lies beneath is religious criticism, that includes the idea, that the erasement of god / false believe could be a goal worth standing for. And we do not mean, that nobody should believe in what they want, but the institutional believe is nothing more than one of the biggest criminal networks. Since all recorded history we see, that authorities used religions and peoples believe to suppress them, justify wars, kill, steal and more.
It is a big mystery to us, that besides all scientific knowledge the church and their false prophecies have still so much to say in this world and influence so many parts of politics, people and so on.
That's why we want to rethink aspects of the bible as well as human decisions and create a different sight on those issues.

What has changed from those first albums to this latest "The Final Sin" with the Art Gates Records label?

Many things have changed. In our 15 years of existence we had to go through many ups and downs, also speaking of unsatisfying label cooperation. We think that in Art Gates Records we found a reliable, professional partner, we are very satisfied right now with their work and our communication.
Besides that, we definitely evolved as musicians and with every record we learn more about ourselves and our musical vision. With “The Final Sin” we are quite sure, that we are where we wanted to be. We are very happy with this record!

What are you talking about in the lyrics of this latest album?

We  started a trilogy on “I Am Risen”, where we talk about a critical and cynical analysis and reflection about religion, christianity and the misery that humanity brings over themself and the world.
“The Final Sin” in our concept is the last strike of the reborn Christ to erase the divine and with that, give the humankind another chance to act better in the future, without the mislead of a false believe and the corruption of the institutions called the catholic church or other confessions.
It ends and rounds up our trilogy. “The Final Sin” ... The end of a false god and believe.

Apart from playing in IRDORATH, do you play in any other group?

Yes, we are quite active in the Austrian metal scene. Everyone of us plays also in more or less active bands. Especially our drummer helps out in many projects, because good drummers are very rare in our extreme music scene, haha.
Some examples, where we are also active: Groteskh, Nocturne, Seduced, and many more.

What do you think of today's Black Metal scene?

I think today it is hard to say “The Black Metal scene”. It depends on what countries you like and also on what sub-genres. I am very happy that, in my opinion, the black metal scene is now much more open minded then it was in the past. You find less people, that sees black metal as elitary or whatever, I personally never liked that side of that genre.
Also IRDORATH is and was never something like “true black metal”. We always had different influences, that you also hear in our discography. A big influence aside of black metal is thrash metal for example.
So all in all I like the fact, that the black metal scene is much more open nowadays. You can even see indeed raw black metal bands on big stages on festivals, for example Nordjevel, who really play a lot since some years.
I think, black metal loses this touch of “only underground” music. It gets more and more acceptance in the main heavy metal scene, which is perfect!
What I do not like and makes me always a little more upset and bored is, that so many bands try to make some mythical and ritual – like stuff, especially on stage. Wearing a frock and standing still on stage with a little smoke is not a ritual. I think that became to standard in the last years. I am more into a honest and powerful show than trying to create something, that is not there. That is not authentical. But I think this will also disappear sooner or later, because meanwhile I know a lot of people that feel the same.

Some bands that influenced you when forming the band?

That is not that easy, because me and my other two founding members and the musicians that joined afterwards have besides black metal many different tastes and influences.
Definitively there were bands like Sodom, Destruction, Mayhem, (old) Behemoth, Vader or Hate that influenced me in the past and are still there. But bands like Iced Earth, Slayer, Immortal as well as german underground black metal were definitively motivations, to start a band.

I was going to ask you how you were doing concerts, but with the stoppage of the VOC19, it is clear. Everything stopped. What do you think of this pandemic that is ravaging the world?

Haha yes, that is a sad issue. We also had to cancel all our release shows and our touring plans.
We are in the same situation as many, so no reason to cry how und unfair life could be... it hits everyone nearly the same.

I am still not 100 percent sure, what I should think about all that. As a normal citizen with family, friends and a job I stick to the idea, that the elders and the sick should be secured and it is important to stop the spreading, so that the health care systems don’t collapse. On the other hand I am not sure, if the economy will manage that for a long time, and how that virus disease could get that meaningful and critical to those countries. It makes me a little nervous when thinking of, what may lie beneath that. Because since the Corona crisis, you do not hear much about refugees, wars and so on. Have all the other problems gone?
But let us be honest, this is the job of our medical experts, politics and smarter people, haha.

Finally tell our readers what they will find when listening to your new album "The Final Sin"?

They will find the creation of honest musicians, that evolved their style and vision of black / thrash metal over 15 years and many outputs.
They can expect a powerful sound with a good mix between driving parts and melodies. But let us make it easy, you find our music online on youtube, on our homepage, on streaming portals, etc., so take a closer look and if you like what you hear, buy our stuff!

Thank you very much for attending our interview. We hope to see you soon playing in Spain.
