DEATHROLL – A SICK LIFE ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Japanese One-Man Black Heavy Metal band Deathroll’s latest album.
Saying that this isn’t Black Metal would be a perfectly valid point, since the actual influence from it is almost null, but the influence of proto-Black Metal bands like Venom or Hellhammer is higher.
With a voice slightly similar to Cronos, the music usually takes you through a path nearer to Thrash Metal, but heavily Avant-Garde, mostly like Messiah. To add more peculiarity to this, you have simple and often solos in the style of Speed Metal and a composition that is used in Heavy Metal, which also gives this hints of Angelwitch or Loudness.
The entirety of the album is really strange, like if Sigh were to make something with more rock’n’roll to it. This is also very present in the videoclip for the song “Abuse”. It is definitely interesting to check if you want something very Avant-Garde and yet very old-school. This approach seems very contradictory, but to really understand it you must listen to this band yourself and then create your own opinion.
I recommend this album if you like Heavy Metal, Proto-Black Metal, Avant-Garde and Thrash Metal.
