HELL FREEZES OVER – HELLRAISER (Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Japanese Speed Metal band Hell Freezes Over’s debut album, “Hellraiser”.
Starting of fast with the title track, this band reminds us very highly of Exciter, but with the own style of their country added to it (the style of bands like Loudness or Anthem), notably on the vocals. The guitars bring us back to the most classic style of Heavy Metal, especially of bands like Raven, Paul Di’Anno-era Iron Maiden, Anvil or Saxon. The most clearly Heavy Metal songs may be “Roadkill” and “Grant You Metal”.
As the album progresses, the song length gets slightly longer, although it doesn’t abandon the glorious realm of Heavy and Speed Metal. Instead this shift slowly brings us near to the last song, “Eternal March Of Valour”, a lengthy instrumental epic that reminds us of Iron Maiden’s early instrumental songs like “Gengis Khan” or “Losfer Words”. Other songs like “End The Breath Of The Night” also near us to the epic side of their sub-genre, but probably leaning more towards a more Hard Rock approach of the concept.
I recommend this album to fans of Speed Metal, Heavy Metal and NWOBHM. My rating is of 9/10.
