ARCANA – LETTERS FROM A LOST SOUL, ACT 1: THE WORLD ONE FORMS ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Canadian Progressive Rock band Arcana’s debut EP, which begins the tragic theatre of life that will be unveiled on all of the band’s releases.
Starting off and being mostly instrument, there is a lot of beauty in the music, that with the help of violins and synthesizers creates a very ethereal background that is really apt for the narration and often reminds us of classical music.
On top of this sonic landscape, we find typical Progressive guitar progressions that makes us think of acts like Dream Theatre, Tool or Rush. The EP focuses on the beauty of instrumentalism (like for instance on the song “Wings”) and the loss of reality through this sonic experience is notable, but every now and then there is some slightly heavier bit that leans everything a bit towards the Metal side of Progressive Rock (although very rarely, and more often tending towards Pop). While the songs are very elegant and complex, it seems to be a pretty common and explored concept of the style with some lack of innovation. But this is a debut EP, so probably in future releases a more distinct sonic personality will be unveiled for this project.
I recommend this album to fans of Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Neoclassical Metal and Soft Rock. My rating is of 8/10.
