ALVAREZ – DIGITARIA ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Austrian Death Doom Metal band Alvarez’s new album.

At first, this album isn’t really Death Doom, instead leaning more towards a Progressive Death Metal sound in the style of late Death or Atheist that becomes most apparent on the title track or “Sun Behind The Sun”. As the album progresses, some more purely Death Metal tracks with hints of Doom start to sound, reminding slightly of early Tiamat (take for instance “The Field Of Reeds”). Then, the album turns quite completely into hard hitting Death Doom with a special and sort of atmospheric kind of darkness in tracks like “Black Light In The Dark” or “Key Of Life”, only to end the album with a great ambient outro.

Thanks to an amazing vocal performance, filling drums and a curious guitar sound that fits well with what’s played, such a diverse album sounds really good, to the point where you will even question if it’s the same band that’s sounding or another one just as good.

I recommend this album to fans of Progressive Death Metal, Death Doom Metal and Atmospheric Death Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
