KATHAROS XIII – PALINDROME ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of the latest album of Romanian Blackened Doom Jazz Metal band Katharos XIII.

On this album the hints of Black Metal are really scarce and only apparent on some songs, like “Vidma”. Instead, the style they play on this release tends slightly towards Doom but especially some unique kind of ambience heavily influenced by Jazz but with a great amount of darkness. What may come to mind when listening to this are the most experimental songs of Carpathian Forest (for the implementation of dark saxophone melodies), some lighter Opera IX songs (for the vocal style used by the singer) and Rïcïnn (for the unique, kind of Avant-Garde soundscapes).

In their own singular musical style, there does not seem to be any flaw in the music. The composition is pretty good and flows naturally and no instrument seems to damage the sonic result. Although everything is good and interesting on this album, you must not put it on expecting anything extreme or metal, but a dark and occult kind of ambience.

I recommend this album to fans of Symphonic Doom Metal, Jazz Metal, Dark Ambient and Blackened Jazz Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
