CATACOMB – BACK TO UNKNOWN KADATH ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of French Death Metal band Catacomb’s upcoming new EP, out on March 18th.

Consisting of re-recordings of their early material, the release combines the glory of their old-school offerings with a more modern and cleaner sound. With a fairly slow tempo in many bits, the songs may be compared to their contemporary Swedish Death Doom Metal scene, also incorporating vast amounts of melody that further strengthen the point.

These tracks are a dark and wretched kind of Death Metal with some notable elegance that reminds of early Therion in them, and they create a mystic aura that drowns in an ocean of despair despite incorporating much more energy than Doom and thus allowing a breath of its putrid air between their sweet sweep pickings. My personal highlights are “The Key” and “Nemesis”.

I recommend this album to fans of Death Metal, especially Death Doom Metal, Symphonic Death Metal and early Melodic Death Metal. My rating is of 8,5/10.
