VARATHRON – WALPURGISNACHT ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Greek Black Metal pioneers Varathron’s classic second album, celebrating its re-release.

Much like early Rotting Christ, Varathron continued to shape Hellenic Black Metal with their unique and distinctive traits, spawning a subgenre that has unfortunately not received enough attention. Their kind of Black Metal includes less fast parts but offers uniquely Greek melodies intertwined with subtle synths to create a truly mystical soundscape that captures the dark essence of the genre much more than rougher bands and scenes.

Topped with a broken vocal performance that doesn’t really appear frequently in bands outside of Greece and is clearly different from the average Black Metal shrieks, the songs deal with cult and obscure lyrics that couldn’t have a better instrumental company. Adding to this a pretty raw but appealing production, only a masterpiece like this one can appear as a faithful continuation of their previous “His Majesty At The Swamp”. My personal highlights are “Cassiopeia’s Ode” and “Birthrise Of The Graven Image”.

I recommend this album to fans of Hellenic Black Metal who are somehow unfamiliar with this masterpiece. My rating is of 10/10.
