Interview with Finnish Metal Masters from Frozen Factory

Frozen Factory: An eclectic mix of rock, prog and metal from Finland release new album ‘Of Pearls & Perils’

Weaved with Frozen Factory’s signature mixed sound of alt-rock, metal and proggy elements, ‘Of Pearls & Perils’ marks their second full-length album and third LP/EP release. Its 12 songs, including their traditional short intro & outro tracks, explore topics of equality, life, the afterlife, and the climate crisis. The sound twists and turns through a range of heavy and light soundscapes that draw careful influence from classic acts such as Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, Iron Maiden & Depeche Mode, while nodding at many others.

The album starts with a voice recorded by one of our most active fans, Angela C., whom They've never actually met in person, as she lives abroad! Her voice also features in several other little moments throughout the record – it’s a delight to include people who support us! Two of her lines are in French, a language the band also featured on ‘The First Liquidation EP’. Stephen chose to use some minor French moments for these two records, because the French language includes some absolutely killer phrases that don’t work so well in English. Angela’s opener for ‘Murder in the Depths’ translates as “Only a fool would never change their mind”.

‘Of Pearls & Perils’: https://open.spotify.com/album/4eGID7yLzTPVrV4wgANg1z

The lyrical themes are dark tones of the album reflect Vocalist Stephen Baker’s inner struggle with the behaviour of much of the human race, including himself.

‘Of Pearls & Perils’ is written entirely by Bassist Tomi Hassinen and Vocalist Stephen, however, but they must credit teir Drummer Marianne Heikkinen for completely levelling up the songs with her immense drumming skill. They’d also like to highlight Guitarists, Mici Ehnqvist and Joni Koivumäki, for adding their excellent flourishes on Lead and Rhythm respectively.

In this new interview, we talk with the band about their new release, inspiration, music influences and future plans. Check it out bellow:

Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Hi! This is Stephen, Frozen Factory's singer, and I can tell you that the name of our band, Frozen Factory, was chosen by our former drummer, Mr Eddie X. When the band first came together, it was only intended to be a quick and fun project with a few sessions in a studio in Lahti, Finland. Our bassist, Tomi, called the project 'Alice in Chains in Lahti' just for a laugh and because he absolutely loves AIC. When the studio session went well, Tomi and Eddie X decided that the band should continue making music, and that was the moment when Eddie suggested 'Frozen Factory'. If I remember correctly, Eddie has just always loved that name, or then he plays a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog? I guess we'd have to ask him!

Why did you want to play this genre?

Our genre is really hard to pin down - yes, I realise a lot of bands say that - but seriously, we're very fluid with our style. We're definitely a rock band though, there's no doubt about that at all. I think everyone in Frozen Factory loves rock music, and rock is what comes naturally to us. It's the kind of music where you can get deep and serious and other people will appreciate it, instead of asking where the party is. Personally, I got into rock for the grand stories, epic singers and fantastic instrumental sections.

Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Our lead guitarist, Mici, and our bassist, Tomi, have known each other for many years, I think since school. I've known our rhythm guitarist, Johnny (Joni), for about ten years, since our other bands have played a few nights together and we've been playing together in an Iron Maiden tribute band. Otherwise, we've all met through Frozen Factory. We found our drummer, Marianne, from one of her online videos where she was playing along to a Muse song - she was so damn good at it that we were determined to get her into Frozen Factory.

Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Personally, I haven't suffered from it in a very long time. When I was really young - a kid - the thought of getting on stage terrified me. My confidence was very low, yet it changed a huge amount when I practised singing and recorded myself doing it. The moment that I realised I had nothing to fear, I stopped being afraid of it. So, I would say to anyone with stage fright that you can work on it; you can make progress. Being afraid of performing today doesn't mean that you cannot go out tomorrow with nerves of steel. Practice and listen to yourself improving, and let that feed your confidence.

What bands have inspired you the most?

We're inspired by a huge amount of music. We usually only talk about a few of the bands that have inspired us, and those are Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden, Alice in Chains, Muse, Rage Against The Machine. There's so much more, and I think you can count just about anything that has deeper meaning in the lyrics and well-thought-out music. Have fun looking for the sounds of our influencers in our music!

What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

We have awesome fans who ask for really understandable things! I can't think of anything weird, at least in Frozen Factory. When I've been singing somewhere else, an old lady in the audience called me over and I thought she wanted to tell me something, however, she took my hand and forced it down her shirt! Ha ha! That's the weirdest fan moment I've had!

What do you think of your fans?

We really appreciate every single one of them, and we hope to meet all of those that we haven't met yet! Thank you to all of you!

Something to add?

Please take a moment to follow Frozen Factory on Spotify or wherever you listen to music, and also be a little old fashioned and tell your friends about us! We hope you'll do this for every new band you like, because it makes such a huge difference for new acts when people follow and spread the word. We love you for it! Peace and happiness to you! Cheers!

INTERVIEW BY DIDAC "METALLIAN" LOPEZ

STEALTH interview by Didac "Metallian" López

01 - The band was formed in 1997 under the name of Metal Militia doing covers of Metallica.
In December 1998, Metal Militia released their first self-produced EP 'Mind Is Blind' featuring 6 original songs and later in March 2000, the band released their second self produced EP 'Existence' consisting of 5 songs. After this you changed the name to Stealth, is that right?

Ivan:
Yes that's how it is. I remember well those years we spent in the rehearsal room composing music for our first two EPs. Then we decided to change our name because we were doing something different from covers. We realized that our original music had to be communicated to the public in a different way.

02 - With the name change to STEALTH, you haven't stopped releasing albums, Ep's, 1 DVD by the 20th anniversary of the band and you appear in several compilations, what will be next?
Ivan:
We are working on mixing two new tracks that should be ready this spring. There will be some novelties in the sound, even if the style of the music will remain more or less the same compared to our last original album 'Fight For Your Faith', which was out seven years ago.

03 - Why is it that you sing in Spanish, English and German?
Ivan:
On our second album 'Check This Out' we decided to write lyrics in languages other than English. I am a lover of foreign languages and that is why it is most likely an experiment that we will repeat in the future.

04 - What do you talk about in your lyrics?
Ivan:
Our latest studio album 'Fight For Your Faith' is a concept about the state of war. Situations such as the wars in the Middle East, the continuous revolt in Tibet or the fierce social protests that take place more and more frequently in the West, inspired the composition of our lyrics on that album.

05 - You have played a lot outside your country, as in countries like Latvia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Belgium .....When in Spain?
Ivan:
We hope to play there soon too. Spain is a country very devoted to metal and it would be an honor for us to play there.

06 - Has anything changed in your music from your first album until now?
Ivan:
Of course yes. Now we are a more mature group musically and we try to avoid some errors in the composition and structure of the songs that characterized our first studio works. Also from the live point of view we have grown a lot and our latest album 'Live for your Faith' testifies to this.

07 - What bands from your country would you recommend us?
Ivan:
Here in Italy there are many bands that I would recommend. But I tell you some names of groups in our area such as Crepuscolo, Duality and Ibridoma. I lived in London for many years I would also like to mention some bands like Die Kur, 8Snake, Maxdmyz and Machine Rox that are doing the music scene there.

08 - What inspired the name of the band?

Ivan:
It was Lorenzo, the guitarist, who chose the name of the group. For sure the Stealth fighter plane has been an important inspiration to arrive at the choice of this name.

09 - Do you hope to play live soon?
Ivan:
Yes, we all hope so. And we can't wait to get on stage again.

11 - Do you know anything about the Spanish Heavy Metal scene?
Ivan:
Yes of course, I know many Spanish bands. Apart from the famous Mago de OZ, I really like the Aracner and the Mallorcan Taifa, two bands present in the Rock Estatal compilation in 2017 of which Stealth was also part.

12 - How is your last album working with the critics and the fans?
Ivan:
Very good. We have gained the attention of many fans especially on YouTube and Spotify.
There have been several interviews and positive reviews and this confirms the quality of the work and interest in the group

13 - I have seen that on your Facebook channel you have more than 11,000 followers.
Do social networks help when it comes to publicizing a band?

Ivan:
Yes of course. It is the most incisive communication for a band even if neither the written press nor the radio should be neglected.

14 - Surely you will be wanting to go out and play again, but with the Covid19
it seems to be going for a long time.

Ivan:
We'll see. The safety and health of all comes first. Here in Italy there is talk of restarting with concerts after the summer but it all depends on the virus.

15 - Here in Spain and in many other countries the bands have given concerts in Streaming-
Have you done it? What you think about this? I personally do not call the
attention, I know it is also a way to help the bands not disappear.
But the feeling of seeing it live to watching it in Streaming is not the same.

Ivan:
I don't like it very much too. The charm and beauty of concerts lies in seeing them live. We have not had any streaming concerts so far, although we will be present at the Renaissance Alternative Music Festival in London that this year will be held online, but with our live video from some time ago

16 - In our country due to restrictions, many concert halls have had to close
forever not being able to bear the situation. Is the same thing happening in your country?

Ivan:
Unfortunately there is the same problem here. There are many concert halls that are thinking of closing forever. Government aid is not enough and I think that after this pandemic we will find many fewer places to play music.

17 - Finally, thank you for answering our questions, you can say what you want for
the people who follow us in Bathory´zine.

Ivan:
I would like to thank all Bathory 'zine readers and all our fans for their support. We promise that we will play concerts again, and why not there in Spain, as soon as possible. Stay Heavy!

Lectern interview by Varg The Mighty.

How was the writing process like for your latest album "Deheadment For Betrayal"?
Fabio “Also this time Pietro wrote all the songs as always, troubles dwelled especially for the most tough to be performed like “Leals”, “Perturb” and “Dogmatician”, also for the drums patterns. In my opinion, only “Pamphlet” was out of tune form the tracklist, but our opinion is that “Deheadment” is our masterpiece so far! For the titletrack we tried to use some effects, but our label rejected that version to avoid copyright troubles, infringements and so on!”.

What has inspired the lyrics of the album?
Fabio “My hate for the Christians! Have you seen the artwork? I wrote “Provvid” which was close to “Palpation” and “Libidinal” from the previous records, about molestations in the Church! The rest is about Satan, as always! That’s what moves our lyrics up!”.

What does the album cover represent in relation with the music?
Fabio “It’s a torture against all the believers of God! The concept was mine and Pietro’s, and Andreas Marschall did the job! The serpents are the evil upon humanity, the demons rack the Christians in a sort of final clash! I can figure out it like a sort of vengeance, retribution or punishment against their lord!”.

Do you feel like the band has improved with the incorporation of new guitarist Manuel Casella?
Fabio “Surely! He and Pietro are the best guitarists we ever had since 1999! Manuel is very talented, he teaches guitar and he is also very skilled, both with the solos and for the rhythmic! We can only improve with him after almost two years he has joined us! Together, they will write incredible pages for Lectern for all the records to come for the band, I’m sure! We are about to begin the songwriting for something new, so I will test their skill”.

How do you think the band has evolved since its beginning?
Fabio “Well, I never thought about that, you know? It’s the first time someone ever put me before that point, but what I can say is that “Deheadment” is the peak of our career until now! Very twisting riffs have been wrote as never before, so I guess they foresee in a certain way the next record”.

Which are the main influences of the band?

Fabio “I will be clear in only one word: death fucking metal! I said many times we approached all about related to the United States style, especially the 90’s! Maybe we maintain the black metal and thrash side too with some innovations, that’s very cool in a death metal outfit!”.

Which has been the best concert you think the band has done?

Fabio “I don’t really know, might be with Incantation also for the importance of such band! It was a blast, believe me!”.

Do you hope to be able to perform live soon?
Fabio “Yes, but before the fans and an audience in their whole thing, as they deserve things as they used to be! No one still actually knows which situation we’ll face, about venues, tours and all about that! We are not gonna have any fucking streaming shows if that’s you want to know, and anything related to that stupid shit! We will have only standard gigs, if possible as everything will be back as it was meant to be but it won’t be shortly I think!”.

When do you think you'll release new music?

Fabio “Who knows? I mean I don’t know when and if we have new songs, partial riffs or whatever! Next time will be special to release an album, not only for the songwriting itself! New life approaches and is waiting!”.

BIOGRAPHY
Lectern was formed in 1999 with the intent of playing, old school brutal death metal with satanic lyrics.
The band comes from Rome, Italy. The inspiration came, within all the bands from United States, especially
based in Tampa, Florida. As the 90's were ending, and with the them the interest in death metal, Lectern tried since the very beginning of composing the music its member were up to listen to. The first studio effort came out in a bunch of months, with different musicians from many bands involved to that project. Gigs were made, but the interest in labels and promoters, was focused on other genres, and no more on death metal. Fabio Bava remained in the band, trying to recruit new musicians
or sessionmen. Only in 2008 and then in 2009 the interest in Lectern grew up once again, also with a good live activity.
