FURZE – BLACK PSYCH TORMENTOR (Review by Varg The Mighty)
Today’s review is of Norwegian Experimental Black Metal band Furze’s new EP.
This release gets the cold and raw production of your most wretched Black Metal bands and gives it an unexpected turn, delivering a similarly recorded piece that adds some extravagance and even fun to the otherwise evil mix. With many fairly upbeat parts and apparent silliness that makes it stray in a great way from your usual Extreme Metal, it nonetheless has an underlying mystique and catchiness that makes it an interesting play.
If you’re looking for something formal and occult you may probably be displeased (even though sometimes these adjectives can be put to proper use here), but this EP has some sort of obscurity that at times may be better described as crazy instead of silly, though always slightly childishly. Adding to this a little bit of rock n’ roll flamboyance, the result is hard to pin down with precise words, and may be better understood listening to it, though this may be done at the readers’ discretion given the experimentation employed. My personal highlights are “Tactics From Beyond” and the title track.
I recommend this album to fans of Experimental Black Metal and Raw Black Metal. My rating is of 8/10.

ABRASIVE
was founded by Ralf Köhler (git./vocals), Alex Ringwald (bass/screams),
and Alex Mäckle (drums) in April 1999! They combined the
old-school-styled Death Metal sound with a piece of Grindcore and US
brutal Death Metal a la SUFFOCATION or SEVERE TORTURE. The result was a
grooving bastard of aggression and brutality with the typical ABRASIVE
guitar lines. Ralf’s typical Death Metal growls and guttural style
vocals, which are completed by the relentless screams of Alex became a
trademark of the band.
After
several releases via NICE TO EAT YOU Records or MDD Records and
countless shows and festivals (Soul Grinding, Mountains of Death, NRW
Deathfest, Flesh Party Open Air, Exhume The Metal Festival) inside and
outside Germany to spread the name of the band out to the world, 800
sold copies of “Desire” MCD (2001) and 1000 sold copies of each
“Devotion” (2004) and “Awakening Of Lust” (2007), ABRASIVE would
establish themselves as a well-known band within the underground scene.
The following releases “The Birth – Born In Sodom” (2011/MDD Rec.) and
“Book Of Sin” (2017/RTM Prod.) confirm their status.
The
new CD “Edge Of Darkness” shows the most varied songs the band have
ever written. The new tracks are darker and more intense than ever
before.

from the band: Back in 2011 Kalin Kolev decided to form a death metal
band so he started writing riff material on his own. Soon, somewhere
around July of the same year, Zhivko Stoyanov, an old friend of Kalin,
came into the picture. Kalin asked him if he was willing to play bass in
a nameless death metal band and he confirmed without hesitation. Kalin
wanted to do vocals also and then it was time to look for a second
guitarist and a drummer. Ivan Ivanov, also a good friend of Kalin, was
the first and the current person to become a second guitar player. The
three continued writing riffs and observing ideas and had a couple of
songs done pretty fast. The tough part was finding an accurate drummer
to play something as challenging as death metal. After going through
several players, the band understood that it would have a hard time
finding the correct guy. The band went through several name ideas and
chose CONCRETE for a permanent solution. On April 18th, 2012 they
released their first self-titled EP "Annihilation Of Humans", containing
5 songs. Even though it was recorded in poor conditions, it was a
strong start and was greatly appreciated by both fans and media. The
band used a drum machine for that release. In the summer of 2012
CONCRETE was introduced to Ivo Ivanov (Lord Curse), formerly of a local
thrash metal band, named Ira Deum. Kalin, Zhivko, and Ivan decided to
take a test rehearsal with Ivo and things came out pretty good right
from the start. Many shows with local bands followed including opening
acts for a couple of foreign colleagues both in venues and open air. In
November 2014, founding member Ivan Ivanov (rhythm guitar) decided to
part ways with the band. The post was filled soon enough by Peter
Dimitrov. The band remained in that lineup until June 2018, when drummer
Ivo Ivanov left the band due to personal reasons. His position has been
filled by Pavlin Nikolov since then. Currently, CONCRETE is located in
its hometown Shumen, playing shows and constantly working over new
material of PURE DEATH METAL.
