Today’s review is of Russian Death Doom Metal band Trewerum’s debut album.
This album incorporates many elements of melancholy through melodies which are easily identifiable as compositions of the Russian Extreme Metal scene. While their direction may often remind of the most melodic Doom bands, the eerie vocal performance adds some bleakness to the despairing soundscape that may bring it near to Black Metal, though in essence the release is always pure and wretched Doom.
Some songs also bring the band’s power to a soul-crushing maximum by taking a step further and exploring some Funeral Doom elements, which seem fairly mastered and are cohesive with the rest of the full-length. Hopefully they are heard more in future albums, together with the subtle yet hypnotic synths that may be found in the background. Although some edges are rough, it’s understandable for a debut and they seem to have enough potential as to polish their compositions in the future. My personal highlights are “Wings” and “The Star”.
I recommend this album to fans of Death Doom Metal and Funeral Doom Metal. My rating is of 8,5/10.
