OUTSHINE – THE AWAKENING ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

OUTSHINE – THE AWAKENING

Gothic Metal band Outshine’s new album.

This release draws heavy influences from Type O Negative and mostly goes in the same direction, although the Today’s review is of Swedish vocal performance differs and lacks some force. On the other side, the music incorporates a fairly high use of synth that creates a stable atmosphere for the melancholic riffs to be developed upon.

While some songs are fairly straightforward, others are longer and take a slightly progressive approach that gives some extra textures to the band’s artistic expression. Overall, the composition follows most of the same principles that were prevalent during the genre’s emergence, but there’s also some freshness to it. The good implementation of many piano lines is also notable. If you’re looking for something depressive, dark and melodic you should check this out. My personal highlights are “It’s All Lies” and “Love Is Dead”.

I recommend this album to fans of Gothic Metal. My rating is of 8,5/10.

FOREVER REIGNING – SLAYER TRIBUTE

FOREVER REIGNING – SLAYER TRIBUTE

Today’s review is of the new tribute album to legendary American Thrash Metal band Slayer, “Forever Reigning”.

This release offers 12 covers performed by 8 different bands, and it mainly praises their 5 first albums. Some of these covers try and be as faithful as possible to the original songs, while others reimagine them completely and take them to their territory, in this case mainly Death Metal or Groove Metal.

While the instrumentation is generally good, most covers don’t have the same feeling in the vocal performance, and certain solos lack the same essence. Nonetheless, there are some pretty solid covers here that will please the fans of Slayer or of any of the featured bands. My personal highlights are Disinter’s cover of “Show No Mercy” and Overt Enemy’s cover of “At Dawn They Sleep”.

I recommend this album to fans of Slayer or any Extreme Metal in general. My rating is of 8/10.
