How was the reception of the album by fans and specialized media?
EH - Hello, thank you very much for having us. A pleasure. The truth is that the reception could not have been better. During the entire first year and a half of the album's release, we did not stop receiving messages through our mail and Facebook requesting albums, especially signed ones. As for the media, the reviews of the album could not be better. From various media in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe or Australia we have come to be named as one of the best debut albums in rock history, others that was one of the best albums of 2018, etc. So goose bumps with every review. They are all on our facebook page, there are about 10 or 12, so you can take a look and read them, that specialized media talk about us that way, the truth is that it makes everything worthwhile.
BZ - The band had a luxurious formation, with former members of bands like "Nova Era", "WarCry", "Lords of Black", "Black Hat" among other. How did the idea for Evil Hunter come about?
EH - That's right, a great training experience. The idea for Evil Hunter arises in June 2017, just now three years ago. My name is José (Rubio) and he told me that he had several ideas and themes, recorded together with Gustavo Segura and that it would be great if he worked some melodies on them to see what could come out. He and I had already worked on a demo before. The case is that the guitars and rhythmic base seemed incredible to me and I was able to make some melodies, in my opinion, very cañeras, so the songs came out naturally, both the voice melodies and the lyrics. In a few weeks we already had the entire album practically composed, so we already had songs and the band had to finish forming, so we looked for a bassist and a second guitar, with the intention that above all they would contribute positive energy to ensure the direction and continuity of the band, in addition to being good musicians and fitting into the band. And finally we hit the nail on the head with Alberto Garrido and Víctor Duran, who not only fitted in but also gave Evil Hunter the sound we were looking for.
BZ - What are you talking about in your lyrics?
EH - As for the theme, we are always inspired by our experiences, and on a daily basis, but, above all, to give ourselves and give the public that strength and desire to fight, survive and face all the daily battles, each one his. Our themes are that dose that gives us strength to continue in the jungle of life. We are the hunters of evil, we are Evil Hunter.
For example, I detail the lyrics for each song on the first album a little:
1. Evil Hunter - Surf the waves
This song is about all the difficulties that we encounter in our daily life (each one of them) and we come to say, that being really strong and with determination we will achieve everything, nothing is going to resist us, and we are going to "surf all the waves " from day to day.
2. Evil Hunter - Evil Hunter
This song gives title to our band and to our new album. Each one has their own demons and their daily problems, and different reasons to fight against those evils, to hunt down evil and not let it escape. We talk about different types of evil, with different metaphors, so each one can make the song their own, to gather strength and fight against their own evils.
3. Evil Hunter - Heartbeat
With this song we try to bring light to a dark and false love, the one that always makes a person feel used, but in the end always returns with the one who makes you suffer ...
4. Evil Hunter - Hot Leather
"You want true love until this dawn" Let me be (Hot Leather!) All your love tonight.
This song is a real experience on a dark night after a big live concert (Of course before being happily married, hahaha)
5. Evil Hunter: Hold me tight
In this song, we are saying that we will do everything possible for you ... Well, there is no wall so high that it makes you faint in the attempt to climb it ... Nor is there such a deep sea that it will not cross you ... everything said in a really heavy metal and hard rock way. ;)
6. Evil Hunter - Go
This song talks about this very competitive world in which everything is often the opposite of how it should be, and in which you only have one way to continue, and you say to yourself "Come on!" And despite all the obstacles you will go ahead with everything.
7. Evil Hunter - By your side
We are always playing in different cities and sometimes even countries, so we are saying honey, even though we are so far from home, and close to "Sin", "I belong to you ... and I will always be by your side";)
8. Evil Hunter - Open up your eyes
This is our humble little tribute to all our fallen "companions, partners and colleagues", killed by that fucking disease where you see everything black, and you think there is no way out. This song is for all of them!
BZ - You play a classic heavy throwing Power Metal, which in parts It reminds me of the 80s. The album from the first moment I go to the first one, repeating it several times, because I did not believe who was really listening to a band from the country. You wanted give it that sound from the start?
EH - Of course, we have “sucked” a lot of hard rock, a lot of Heavy and Power metal, and it is what comes out spontaneously when it comes to composing and wanting to express and capture with our songs everything we feel.
BZ - Do you compose between all, or does someone special?
EH - The truth is that most of the songs come out of a riff, an idea by Jose, about which I start surfing, as I say, sing over it, until I find the melody that “hits you on the belly ”, as I say, or until I do“ magic ”, as Jose says. There are other songs that come out of a riff or a chord base, with a melody that I and Jose bring "magic" finding the perfect riff for the song, and then Gustavo and Alberto put their rhythmic part, putting the details and the forceful rhythm that each song demands. Alberto, Gustavo and Victor also bring some ideas. Once we have that base, we only need to add the letters, which I usually do. You just have to feel that the song asks you, how it walks, and that we are going to transmit it, and the theme, comes out alone.
BZ - Tell me how was the recording process, where the disc was recorded and who was in charge of the cover.
EH - Well, it could seem complex, since the drums were recorded in Madrid, the guitars and bass in Orense and the voices in Tarragona, but the truth is that the recording was a fairly simple process, because although it seems unbelievable. José Rubio already has many tables as a producer, composer and arranger, so once the tracks of the entire band were there, it was easy for me to record from my studio in Tarragona and send the tracks so that everything would fit together. If the album has that strength and heat, having recorded like this, imagine what the band's second album will be ... That will burn !!!The cover was made by a friend of Jose, Bernat Brnix, and it was great!
BZ - Apart from Evil Hunter, do any of you play in other bands?
EH - Yes, the good thing about music is that you do not need to be monogamous, as in “love” 😉, as long as everything is clear and well organized, it is great that we do more things, everything influences and you never stop growing, learning and improving .
José is in two or three other bands (Galilea, Diabólica, Bajel, which is a Metal Opera, etc). Alberto is with Alien Rockin ’Explosion, Gustavo also has his cover band, and I myself am with Chicanos and Viuda Negra, in addition to collaborating with various cover bands, and studio session recordings.
BZ - What bands have influenced you as musicians?
EH - Well, this question is complex, since each of us has very different influences.
For example, José is very Accept and Scorpions, Gus is very Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Jethro Tull, King Krimson ,,,,, Alberto and Victor are more than Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Opeth, Soilwork or Mr. Big, and I am much more Hard rocker, Guns and Roses, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, although I love Heavy and Power Metal, Iron Maiden, Helloween, etc.
BZ - For when a new band job?
EH - It's about to fall ... So far I can read. This confinement has gone a long way, so ... Hot, hot. Stay tuned.
BZ - As you can see, now with this pandemic, playing live with a limit of capacity?
EH - Will it pay off to the bands and the promoters?
BZ - And what about doing concerts in streaming?
EH - Doing a concert in Stremaing, is like making you a ...., masturbate, come on, yes, but no.
Playing live is like a good fuck. So, in short, nothing to do. It relieves you, but where a good live concert is played, the straws are removed.
BZ - Do you have confirmed dates already, for when it can be played in the rooms?
EH - We had many dates and festivals for this summer, and they were in the air, and they have stayed there. Now it is necessary to reprogram dates, and to close all the agreements with the venues and promoters, which even they do not know right now when they can be carried out.
