Pinball Wizard Interview by Varg the Mighty

1. Pinball Wizard is a Spanish Hard Rock band that have been bringing
some international attention to themselves for a while now, and today
we have an interview with them about their latest EP. How are you
doing?

Hello there! First of all, thank you for this interview and thanks to those
reading this as well! We’re doing fine over here, we can’t complain, as we
have been able to keep the same rhythm of rehearsals as before, despite
these lockdowns we have to go through.
2. Great to hear. What inspired the band’s name?
Pinball Wizard came to our minds as an outsider saw us struggling to find
a fitting band name for a hard rock band (13 years ago now), and she just
told us: “Why don’t you go with Pinball Wizard?”
We all just liked it for it pays tribute to one of the biggest bands in rock
history, The Who, and one of their most recognizable songs; and also it
sounds really powerful and catchy.
3. Which are the main influences of the band?
Considering the four of us, we really like very different kinds of music,
and we appreciate them all, as all of them, in some kind of way, help us
open our minds a bit more each time; though we can’t deny that maybe the
style we have always absorbed the most is clearly hard rock and classic
rock, with some mythical bands like Guns ‘n Roses or Aerosmith, and
some that aren’t maybe that famous, but equally legendary for us, such as
The Brew or one of our national bands Arizona Baby.
4. Do you hope to play live soon?
Of course we are. The density of gigs have obviously gone far down, but
we refuse to stop sharing our shows, and find our way through the
situation by offering streaming shows, or having the audience sat down
and wearing masks… we can always reinvent concerts, but they will never
die, and we will be jumping and sweating among the audience as soon as
possible!

5. In which country or city would you love to play live and why?
It really is a great feeling to play in our home city Seville and having people
knowing the lyrics to our songs, as well as it is playing in further places
where people comes to us at the end of the show and say “you guys just
made a new fan right here”; but for now I would say our dream is to play
abroad, and experiment how an international tour feels like.
6. How do you think you have evolved musically since the first album?
Maybe our first LP (after two EP’s) ‘Shout It Out and Break the Sound’
(2017) went more for the classic sound of rock and roll music with a bit
more harshness thrown in.
In time, with the birth of the single ‘The New Generation’ (2019) and our
brand new EP ‘Make Millennials Great Again’ (2020), I guess we decided
to explore a bit more other kinds of sounds, song structures, chord
progressions and all that stuff.
We just refuse to be one of those bands that sound the same throughout
the years.
7. How do you think the local music scene has evolved since you started
playing?

The rock music scene here in Seville is a really close one, as we all like to
know each other and hang out, and we think that’s really healthy because
we all grow together musically.
That can be seen in concerts, where you are watching a band upstage
giving it all, and five other bands in the audience jumping around like
monkeys meanwhile.
8. How was the writing process like for this EP?
This time we just really tried everything that came to our minds instead of
discarding anything before putting it in context, and sometimes developed
an entire part to just end up throwing it away, but this filtration process
and this thirst for innovation is what gave birth to these five eclectic music
pieces, which mix our classic sound with some new flavours such as
electronic parts, psychedelia, southern rock or even bolero.
I think we really outdid ourselves this time!
9. What are your lyrics mostly based on and what inspired the EP’s title?
The title serves as a critique of the campaign slogan used by this orange
guy who has been ruling the world his own selfish way lately.
We decided to use the word ‘millennials’ because this is the generation we
belong, and the lyrics for the songs in the EP talk about how we have to
fight to show what we are capable of daily in many different ways. Some
songs kind of debate about quite tricky themes like capitalism or
environmental issues (main single ‘We Will Burn’), while others talk
about more trivial situations in our lives.
That contrast is what defines ‘Make Millennials Great Again’.
10.Are there any future plans besides this new EP at the moment?
We are one of those lucky bands that have been able to continue playing
around and organising our plans for the future.
We have played in big Spanish cities like Vitoria or Madrid after the
quarantine, and we have a national 10 date tour with the band VA Rocks
scheduled for March 2021, along with other concerts at the start of the
year and many more that had to be postponed for after the pandemic.
Besides, we are always working in new songs and new shows in our
rehearsals.
11.Thanks for the interview, is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks to you too! Greetings from Seville, and a big hug from Joey,
Memphis, David and Álvaro to everyone who made it here… and to those
who didn’t, why not?
