APATHY NOIR – AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Swedish Death Doom Metal band Apathy Noir’s new album.

This release adds some melodic and somewhat progressive elements in the likes of Draconian to the bleak and crushing soundscape of pure Death Doom Metal. To add some layers of misery, there are also some carefully placed clear vocals similar to Katatonia together with Blackened Doom passages of intense darkness.

Lyrically exploring the vast sea, the music seems to add a certain beauty to the disgrace upon the unwary which it brings, while never shading the true horror that follows, thus ensuring it as a perfect soundtrack to Poe’s descent into the maelstrom. This conjunction of pain and elegance also brings to mind modern My Dying Bride, though this band has a pretty personal sound that distances it from all the bands here used as comparisons. This is also a release that gets better and better after each listen. My personal highlights are “The Shipbreaker’s Song” and “Wanderers”.

I recommend this album to fans of Death Doom Metal, Blackened Doom Metal and Melodic Doom Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
