OLD CASTLES – SARCOPHAGICAL LAMENT OF THE PAST (Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Raw Ambient Black Metal project Old Castle’s new album.

Given the absolutely raw recording, this release may only appeal to fans of the grimmest and most unholy kind of Black Metal, but it is truly worth the time. Mixing a hypnotic and Mayhem-like assault with slower bits that are not less obscure, these songs will grab you with hands of frost into an old-school abyss of wretched pain and blight.

It’s interesting to note how songs such as “Malicious Entities (Adorned Corpses With Excrement)” also implement elements of Dark Ambient that create an aura of despair comparable to the interludes of Necrofrost. While the recording is rough, an experienced listener will realize how the sound is well planned and transmits exactly what’s intended, it is not the product of lazy production but a studied effort to sound as unholy as possible. Some songs may seem repetitive to the listener, but after a couple of plays their true cathartic essence is revealed in a way that is lately hard to find in Black Metal. My personal highlights are “Megalithic Altars of Azazyel” and “Carved in Funerary Bones”.

I recommend this album to fans of Raw Black Metal and Ambient Black Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
