SULLEN GUEST – PHASE ( Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of Lithuanian Death Doom Metal band Sullen Guest’s upcoming new EP.

Consisting of 3 long tracks of despairing, cruel and wrathful Doom, the release absorbs the listener into a black world of pure angst. Combining a powerful yet elegant and classic sound in the likes of Aeternus with some added pain that reminds of certain Funeral Doom bands though never fully accessing the genre (somewhat similarly to Apathy Noir in this sense as well as in the general ambience), the songs create a dark atmosphere full of gloomy melodies over a soundscape that is no doubt product of veteran musicianship.

The release deals with the phases one passes after loss, and it is surely a good sonic representation of an unfruitful pursuit of solace. Fans of anything slow, depressive and mesmerizing should check this out. This is also an EP which grows in magnificence after each play, so listening to it multiple times is recommended.

I recommend this album to fans of Death Doom Metal and Melodic Doom Metal. My rating is of 9/10.
