BLACK BRAID – BLACK BRAID I (Review by Varg The Mighty )

Today’s review is of American Atmospheric Black Metal solo project Black Braid’s debut album.

This release combines a cold and aggressive kind of darkness reminiscent of Mgla with a really immersive atmospheric direction that sonically displays the vastness of the landscapes that may have inspired these songs. The kind of atmosphere employed may bring to mind Wayfarer, although the native American themes here produce a vastly different approach, and not just lyrically.

From all the native American bands that are now slowly but surely emerging from the shadows Black Braid may very well be the best up to date. Combining an aphotic and beautifully bitter Black Metal with acoustic interludes that necessarily paint the folk side of the album, the full-length’s dynamism is carefully crafted in an optimal way that delivers what’s intended with no chance of tiring a fan of the genre. My personal highlights are “Sacandaga” and “Prying Open The Jaws Of Eternity”.

I recommend this album to fans of Atmospheric Black Metal and Folk Black Metal. My rating is of 10/10.
