NIHILISTH - CARNAL LEFTOVERS
Pre-Entombed Swedish death metal powerhouse Nihilist released two
demos and two EPs before becoming Entombed and going on to great fame in
the death metal underground. Old timers used to talk about the first
Entombed album wistfully, pointing out that the “real” Swedish death
metal revolution had happened with Carnage and Nihilist.
Addressing this outlook, in 2005 Threeman Recordings issued Nihilist (1987-1989) which compiled these and another recording session, and in 2018, this was re-issued by Independence Day Recordings as Carnal Leftovers. On May 1, 2020, Earache Records will re-issue Carnal Leftovers for its big-label debut.
The compilation consists of two demos, “Premature Autopsy” and “Only Shreds Remain,” paired with the Drowned and Radiation Sickness EPs and the Entombed demo “But Life Goes On.” With only one duplicated track (“Face of Evil”) this makes a handy view into the career of this band before they were recognized, when they were most focused on the intensity of communication.
You can pre-order the CD, LP, and tshirt in various packages through the Earache webstore, anticipating it shipping in May of this year.

Testament Frontman Describes What It’s Like to Have the Coronavirus
Testament frontman Chuck Billy was one of the first high-profile members of the metal community to come down with COVID-19,
the illness caused by the coronavirus. Testament were on tour in Europe
with Exodus and Death Angel through late February before dates started getting canceled, but it wasn’t until all three bands returned home in mid-March that they started experiencing symptoms.
In addition to Billy, Exodus guitarist Gary Holt and Death Angel drummer Will Carroll came down with COVID-19, with the latter hospitalized and still in rough shape. Other members of the touring party allegedly fell ill as well, including Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio.

Edmonton’s Omniarch are set to release their debut self-titled album on May 8, 2020.
Edmonton’s Omniarch
are set to release their debut self-titled album on May 8, 2020.
Melodic, technical and relentless, the Canadian act is refining the
chaos of death metal and adding intricate technicalities.
The first single off the debut is ‘Ohm Cairn’, a savage journey of 6-string delights and aggressive melodies. Omniarch
has been toiling away on this album and is excited to show off their
handiwork to local and international fans. The album is a vastly
differing and unique journey through history, mythology, the
imagination, and learning through introspection and reflection and the
single tells the tale of the Omniarch, his rise to power and omnipotent
rule.
They have cast their net wide and expect to entice fans across the metal spectrum, in their own words:
“It
is suitable for fans of aggressive, progressive and technical metal
music, it is something new, but still within the realms of what we know
and love. Our debut album is our full, headlining set, and plays great
in the order of the album.”
Any fans of technical and progressive death metal will find comfort in the blasting sounds of Omniarch, especially those who like Revocation, Inferi, and The Black Dahlia Murder.
Interview with Cyan Bloodbane by Didac López.
Cyan Bloodbane, was formed in 1997. Of that very first formation there is only
Xavier
Escayola (Guitar) and the Quesada brothers, Toni on drums and Eric on keyboards
and vocals.
During this time countless members have passed, why is so much change due?
Hello Didac! A pleasure talking with you!
- The truth is that we have already been 25 years, this May we turned 25, in 1997
we did
our first concert, but we had already two years, the changes of formation is a
normal thing
in this of music, especially when you do not live from it.
Cyan Bloodbane has always had the door open for everyone, we have never wanted
this to be
an obligation, but it is very difficult to combine it with family, work ... perhaps
now I
would say that we are at our best!
Have you been on the scene for 23 years, in which you have recorded, 2 demos,
3 albums and two tributes? What has changed from that first demo "Camino a la sombra"
to your album "Espiritu de lucha"? -Well ... maybe we are playing well now !!! the experience is very important, and
years ago
we had a lot of desire but we lacked that experience .... as I said before, I think
that now
the group sounds very compact and we we understand very well.
The time elapsed between one recording to another, is it because several of you play
in other bands? -No no, not at all, it has never influenced that, we never consider the time between
disc and
disc, it comes out when we think it is convenient, when we think we have something
good to offer
... without haste, although perhaps it took too long to get this last.,
What are your lyrics about?
-Our lyrics started talking about epic themes, about the fantastic genre of sword
and witchcraft,
but perhaps now not all lyrics are like that, both in New times and the Spirit of
struggle, there
is reference to today's society, the world we live in, the injustices, and also
regarding more epic
and fantastic genre issues.
Bands that influenced you to play Power Metal, both national and foreign.
-Evidently when we started in the mid 90's, Power Metal was booming .... bands
like Running Wild,
Rage, Grave Digger, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Rhapsody ..... it
was what we listened
a lot, since national level of course our two great references, Medina Azahara
and Sangtrait.
Do you compose the songs together?
-Musically each one contributes his grain of sand .... the theme of the lyrics is
more personal ... in
this last album, the lyrics were written by Javi Gianno, (less GRAM,) and previously,
in New Times they
were written by Santi Andreo (minus YOUR LAND) ... Eric took care of the lyrics for
the first two.
I think you have always been self-financed, your work. Have you had any contact with
any record company?
-Yes, we have had several contacts..but it never seemed appropriate to do so .... we
think that for now
it is going well for us ... after all, nobody is going to pay you for the album !! !!
I know that now that with COV19, everything has stopped, until this world pandemic
passes.
Since I have mentioned it, what do you think of this virus?
-Well, it's terrible, the truth is that nobody could imagine all this ...... 😰
Did you have closed concerts, this year?
-The truth is that yes, we had several concerts announced and some more to announce ... we
do not know what will happen, we find it difficult to return to the live shows this year!
Finally, could you tell me what fans can expect from this, your latest work?
-We are very happy with how it is working, we are selling enough copies, even in
America
and
Europe, we define it Power Metal from the 90s ... who likes epic will love it, we
are
looking
forward to going out again to be able to continue presenting it live! 💪💪
Thank you very much, and I hope to see you again soon live.I missed the last one
you gave in Terrassa in the SalaRagna Rock. They spoke highly of the concert to me.
-Thank you very much, for the unconditional support during these 25 years ... because
you
have seen us born !!

STEVE VAI Looks Back On Working With DAVID LEE ROTH And WHITESNAKE - "I Wouldn't Trade Those Experiences For Anything"
Guitar legend Steve Vai recently spoke with Guitar World, opening up
about his formative years becoming the artist he is today, the bands he
has worked with, and avoiding the stereotypical "rock star" pitfalls
along the way.Following is an excerpt from the interview.
Guitar World: You went to work with Frank Zappa at such a young age. It was a great opportunity, but were you intimidated to be around him?
Vai: "Oh, my God, yes! On one level it was petrifying. I was 18, and this was Frank Zappa. I was enamored of him. I would watch him and think, 'OK, Frank is reaching for his coffee. What’s he gonna tell me? What the fuck am I doing here?' All those things went through my head. (Laughs) But it’s funny, because at the same time, on a performance level, I was completely different.
I knew I could contribute to his music, and I was fiercely confident. I was like, 'Go ahead. Give me anything you want. I’m going to play it, and I’m going to blow you away. I am not one bit intimidated, because I know the secrets.' And my secret was just my practice ethic. Give me anything and I will break it down. I’ll learn it perfectly until I can play it with confidence to the point where you’re impressed. And I did that. I did things that to this day I can’t believe - things like 'The Jazz Discharge Party Hats' and 'Sinister Footwear'. I loved playing those things perfectly and as beautifully as I could. On that level, I wasn’t intimidated at all."
Guitar World: Soon after leaving Frank’s world, you joined Alcatrazz. Did that feel like a starter band into the big leagues, or were you thinking at the time that it might be a lifetime commitment?
Vai: "No, when I joined Alcatrazz, I knew it wasn’t how I would spend my life. But I saw it as a good opportunity to step into the limelight of an incredible virtuoso, Yngwie Malmsteen, and make a rock record with some really cool guys. I never looked at any of the bands I joined as lifetime commitments; that just didn’t seem realistic. And this was much to the chagrin or disappointment of my high school band even, because we had a great little thing going, and then I suddenly moved to Boston to attend Berklee. 'Why are you doing this to us and our band that has all these hopes and dreams of fame and fortune?' I loved that band. I’ve said this before: It was my favorite band that I was ever in. Because when you’re in a high school rock band, there’s nothing cooler than that."
Guitar World: So you obviously didn’t see playing with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake as lifetime commitments either.
Vai: "No, absolutely not. I loved those guys, and I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything. But as I was going through it all, I saw how easy it was to get wrapped up in creating an identity for yourself from it: 'I’m a rock star. I’m playing arenas, winning all the polls and making so much money. It’s who I am, and I’m going to hold on to this forever.' That always seemed like insane thinking to me. Did I enjoy it? Sure, but I also knew it wasn’t what I was going to do all my life, because the music I had in me had to come out; otherwise, my career would be an epic fail."

DEF LEPPARD Frontman JOE ELLIOTT - "Punk Rock Was An Enormous Part Of My Life; It Was Exactly That Same Attitude That Made Me Want To Be In A Band"
Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott guested on Rock Hard With Jay Conroy and discussed the new album from his side project, Down N’ Outz, as well as Def Leppard's history, plans for a new studio album, and the band's upcoming tour schedule. Check out the interview below.
Elliott: "A lot of rockstars are lazy, and a lot of rock stars are thought of as lazy, like, 'Ah, you guys do drugs and shag women and smoke reefer and drink beer.' Punk rock was an enormous part of my life. You wouldn't think that listening to my music necessarily, but honestly, the attitude, punk was a lifesaver. With the punk thing, what that did was: as a kid, I would listen to the Pistols and The Clash, The Damned, and The Ramones, and I would go, 'I could do that,' and it was exactly the same attitude that made me want to be in a band. I couldn't sing like Paul Rogers or Robert Plant, that was never going to be my thing, but I could do Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry, Tom Verlaine, any of that kind of thing."
Joe Elliott Interview by Jay Conroy

Anvil Frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow Discusses New Album "Legal At Last," Hemp, Swing Music And More
While tours all over the world ground to a halt in the past two
weeks, one band who have never shied away from living their dream is
Anvil. The Canadian trio embarked on a lengthy European tour a few weeks
ago, with three weeks in the United Kingdom planned. However, as luck
would have it, shows were soon cancelled thanks to the COVID-19 virus
and the band were forced to return to the great white north.
The final gig before flying across the Atlantic however, was in my hometown of Swindon and I couldn't have been more excited to meet some genuine legends of heavy metal in my backyard. Before their show at Level III, I sat down with frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow to discuss the band's scorching new album, "Legal At Last," the longevity of the group, the influence of swing music and much more. You can listen to the interview in full below with a transcript to follow.

Metal Underground: Anvil Interview (Audio)
Interview with Alyanza by Didac López / Bathory´zine
Alyanza was formed in 2003 and the following year you released the Demo "Jail 1939" sung in Spanish. Back then the voice was Sergio Bermudez (Ex Cyan Bloodbane, Ex Dragonslayer and now in Lyra Mortem) -. He was until 2007 and then Andrés passed, also low, on vocals. Was that when you decided to go from singing in Spanish to English?
-Andrés- Alyanza was formed in 2002, hehehe, yes, when I joined the voices, Manolo and I decided that in better English.
Before playing in Alyanza, had any of its members played in other groups?
-Andrés- I was at Crusade which was heavy metal and Abrahel, black metal.
-Alberto- I have been to several, including Crisis Alma and Fuck Off.
-Marta- I have done a little of everything, the first group in which I met Alberto was Harmmony Dreams, which was melodic death and in which I was the singer. I also spent some time in Fuck Off as a bass player, but where I got personally involved the most was as a singer for Crisis Alma.
-Alf-I was a guitarist in Zarrio and The smokers die younger, then I switched to drums in Alyanza.
After your first demo "Mind Control" came out, what was the change from the demo to this first album?
-Andrés- The most significant change was the move to thrash metal, with sharp guitar voices, and thrasher drums.
-Alf-Mainly the style that became more thrash and part of the training. We became three components at that time.
What are your lyrics about?
-Andrés- A little bit of everything, from the consciousness of the mind, coexistence, and other ramblings to the simplest thing that is shitting in the whole system, to the Sex Pistol.
-Alberto- Although this latest album is not conceptual, the truth is that more than half of the songs speak, to a large extent, of the personal microcosm and its conflicts.
-Marta- Delving into the conceptual part of the album, I would add that we have related the internal conflict affecting the metaphysical part of the human being and the torture that this involves.
-Alf-A little bit of everything, about society, things that happen in the world and good or bad feelings that every person in their life goes through ..
Do you do them all?
-Andrés- In the first 3 we did them between Manolo and me, and the latter, we did them between the 3 Alberto, Marta and me.
-Marta- The truth is that it has been surprisingly easy to work the letters cooperatively. It has been very fluid, since without seeking it, we have all agreed on the thematic approach, which is in keeping with the musical sense of the themes.
-Alf-For my part not since I am not good at writing them hahaha.
Your second album was called "A New Beginning" followed by "Gods" and now shortly the fourth called "Life, Human ..." will be released. I met you with "Gods" and it hooked me from the first moment. What can your fans, including myself, expect from this new work?
-Andrés- Well, this new album has a little bit of everything, it is even more varied than Gods and it also has some pretty cool songs.
-Alberto- We try to maintain the varied spirit of the Gods by increasing the extremes. In addition to flirting with death metal and some more sinister textures, we have used much more orchestration than in previous works.
You have come to play in one of the Rock Fest editions and you have even supported bands like Sodom and Onslaught. You haven't stopped playing. Do you have any offer from abroad to go play?
-Andrés- Well, the truth, not yet. We hope that this year and with this album, we can go outside.
-Alf-Not at the moment, but I think I remember that at some point there was an occasion.
In recent times there have been changes in the band, you have included Marta Roura on keyboards. Why is the inclusion of keyboards in the band, is it because of the new songs?
-Andrés- Alyanza since the 2nd disc has included keyboards in some parts of her songs, and on a couple of occasions a friend had played with us live. The latter if it has a lot of keyboard.
-Alberto- Andrés designed the new formation with that idea in mind, to be able to use denser and more varied arrangements. This has allowed us to include songs that were not designed for a more conventional structure.
-Alf-Because in some songs (even from the first album) there are recorded bases and in the last songs even more. In addition to filling the topics much more and earning a lot live.
Talk to us a little about "Life, Human ..."?
-Andrés- This Life, Human ... is the culmination of a long time of work, after the departure of Gods and the departure also of Manolo. 3 years have passed and we have tried to capture all our inspiration.
-Alberto- I think we have achieved a good balance, we combine themes from almost 30 years ago with other newborns. The stylistic freedom is remarkable, without pretending to address a certain audience, it is very open.
-Marta- I join the opinion of others and I add that although as we have already said, the album is very free and offers from very polemical themes to calmer themes, passing through complex themes to others that are more direct, the ensemble remains very integrated.
-Alf-They are a little more complex and complete, the truth is that they personally fit very well with what we do and are very well adapted to keyboards. The solos are outrageous and quite polemic.
With many friends I have talked to, most have told me that you are the Spanish Kreators. Has this band influenced you? And personally what are the influences of each member of the band.
-Andrés- All music influences you when composing yours. Kreator for me is the best Thrash group, but I don't see much like Alyanza either ... hahaha
-Alberto- From Mike Oldfield to Morbid Angel.
-Marta- I listen to very diverse music, from sinister techno to extreme death metal. If the song or the group reaches me and makes my skin stand on end ... go ahead with it !! And yes, Kreator is one of them.
-Alf-More than influencing, some may be similar. For my part, the influences are very varied, from groups like Slayer to bands like Cannibal Corpse.
Finally say what you want.
-Andrés- Well, thank you Didac, for this interview, and that soon we will have this new album for sale, in all stores. Thanks Didac.
-Alberto- Thank you very much and to all those interested in our music.
-Marta- Thank you also for offering us the opportunity to make our music known a little more. We hope you like it and enjoy the album.
-Alf-First thank you very much for having us in the interview and I hope that our new job pleases the public and goes as far as possible !!
Thank you.

Thank you.

BPMD, the new band of Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth, Mike Portnoy, Mark Menghi and Phil Demmel already has a record label
BPMD (Blitz, Portnoy, Menghi and Demmel) is the new band made up of reputed musicians
from the metal scene: Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth (voice, Overkill), Mike Portnoy (drums,
The Winery Dogs, Sons Of Apollo), Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance) and Phil Demmel (guitarist,
Vio-Lence, former Machine Head). They just stamped their signature on a contract with the
record label Napalm Records.
The objective of this project is to recover rock classics and sift them with a heavier style,
according to their own influences. “The BPDM sessions were a lot of fun. They took us back
to our roots or even before our roots. While we were carrying them out we realized that it
was something special, and this was how Napalm Records perceived it with just one listen. ”
In previous statements, Demmel referred to BPMD's debut album as an album of versions of
classic American bands from the 1970s, such as ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Gang, Aerosmith,
Grand Funk Railroad ... adapted to a style closer to metal. .
